Vessels are as old as Man. Man created vessels for survival. They were used for carrying water, storing grains, and even traded for other commodities. Almost everyone has a fascination for the shape of a vessel and the materials that an artist chooses for creating a vessel. The telephone wire bowls from the Durban area of South Africa are wonderful examples of how function evolved into craft. In the 1960’s, a security night watchman began to weave using leftover telephone wire that was found in the area where he was working. Using his knowledge of Zulu basket-weaving and the conventional patterns used, he wove new vessels in the vibrant colors of the telephone wire, thereby creating the next evolution from the famous Zulu baskets. The wire vessels and plates are now collector’s items. We have vessels made of fibers and finished fabrics from fiber artists Debra Hosler and Dee Durkee. We also have wood vessels from wood-turner Al Mason who lets the wood grain dictate the shape of his vessels. The glass blossom bottles from Holly Wallace are beautifully crafted and add wonderful drops of light to your vase of flowers. Ceramist Miguelangel Calero of Nicaragua painstakingly paints his pieces in bold geometric patterns to create the most awe-inspiring pottery. The ceramic vessels from Karl Yost, award-winning artist from Colorado, are organic in nature and are great examples of the union between form and function. And, finally, the beautifully sculpted stainless steel vessels from Swiss artist, Franz Arnold will add beauty and dimension to any home.
Vessels make a perfect gift as they provide both a functional and artistic purpose. Please enjoy looking at our vessels from artists around the world.
